Gymnastics: Elks beat Maple Grove in opener

The Elk River-Rogers-Zimmerman gymnasts opened with a conference victory over Maple Grove, 134.7 to 130.0, at home on Thursday evening.

The team’s two veterans led the way as Krista Kovar scored 35.1 and won vault and bars, and Katherine Fleck scored 34.85 and won beam and floor.

Also helping the Elks post their 43rd straight dual meet win were another returning letter winner, Morgan Wallmow and varsity newcomers Alissa George, Caitlyn Reeves, Kaitlyn Dhooge and Ashley Stewart.

Alex Kara had a 32.4 all-around to lead Maple Grove. The Crimson are coached by former Elk assistant Shannon Hoover, whose assistant this year is her daughter Sabrina Hoover, three-time state all-around champion for Rogers.

Next for the Elks is the Northfield Invitational on Saturday.
