The Elks River wrestlers lost to Centennial 36-27 in their opener on Thursday evening at home.

“It wasn’t our best (lineup),” said coach Paul Nelson, noting that two starters were out with injuries, “but it hurts, because this was a conference match, and we did not bring it, and the other team did.”

On the upside, three freshmen who are new starters won: Anthony Meister (pin) at 103, Sam Gibas at 152 and Casey Schiltz at 160. Also pinning were Kyle Ziemer at 138 and Bobby Schmitz a 285, while Michael Young at 182 rallied for a 7-6 win.

Centennial’s Jack and Jake Berglund got key decisions over two of the Elks best guys, Garrett Caldon (overtime) and Cole Moening, respectively

Next for the Elks is a dual at Andover on Friday evening.
