The Rogers Royals, anticipating a strong season, lost their opener to one of the top teams on their schedule, the Chaska Hawks, 73-62 at home Tuesday evening.

“It was a good first game for us,” said coach Karlee Anderson. “We got tired at the end and had to foul. We got pushed around a little to much at the end, too. They are a good team.”

Ellie Thompson, the Hawks’ standout senior center, led with 24 points. Senior guards MaKena Panning and Hannah Rohe added 15 and 12, respectively. Rohe sank four 3-pointers, all in the first half.

Junior guard Taylor Anderson scored 15 points, senior post Lindsay Dorr 14, sophomore post Hannah Sjerven 11 and junior guard Taylor Paulsrud nine for the Royals.

Rebounds were even, but Chaska enjoyed torrid 61 percent shooting to Rogers’ 47 percent, and took care of the ball extremely well, Anderson noted.

Rogers will host Spring Lake Park on Friday.
