Zimmerman girls basketball
Coaches — Lance Dalby (head), Joe Casey, Mick Van Donseo, Rich Bond
Last year — 5-11 conf., 11-16 overall
Captains — Lexi Funaro, Jamie Schuster
Returning starters — Funaro (sr G), Brooke Borchardt (sr F)
Other letter winners back — Schuster (sr F), Sabrina Steinke (jr G), Kaitlin Mason (sr G)
Also in the mix — Cami Bond (jr G), Abbi Wisness (jr P), Maddie Jacob (jr G), Amanda Rodriguez (jr F), Alexis Oelerich (jr G), Damielle Williams (fr G)
Worth noting — Funaro led with 12 ppg last year but missed last 10 games with injury. She’ll be point guard.
Coach says — “We hope to get scoring from everywhere. We probably won’t have many 20-point games. We will be a guard-heavy team so they’ll have to help rebound.”
Outlook — Thunder made some improvement last year but still have a ways to go to get back to .500 or beyond.
Coaches — Pat Burch (head), Aaron Fair, Mark Hayes, Mitch Robinson
Last year — 1-4 conference, 5-12 overall
Captains — Hunter Smith, Mitch Gagne, Austin May
Returing starters — Hunter Smith (sr), Mitch Gagne (sr), Justin Viktora (sr), Austin May (jr), Justin Hartman (jr), Billy Johnson (so), Trentin Milles (so), Chase Rosby (so), Tristan Pettit (so), Billy Johann (so), Evan Carr (fr), Kaleb Kleiver (fr)
Also in the mix — Dustin Neseth (sr), Lee Christopherson (sr), Nathan Thompson (8th)
Worth noting — Smith was 32-11, May 27-12 last year …. Robinson, a 5th-place medalist at state last year, joined the staff to work with grades 7-8-9. Also added is Hayes, former Princeton head coach who had several state individual champs.
Coach says — “With only Mitch Robinson graduating, we should have a full lineup and a good chance to improve on our five wins. We will be led by two-time state entrant Hunter Smith. Overall depth and improvement of our younger guys should make for a fun year.
Outlook — The program is growing, from 24 kids the year before Burch started, to 47 this year. Coach feels Smith, May, Milless and Gagne have good shot at state.
