Elk River basketball, boys

Coaches — Randy Klasen (head) … Aaron Osterman, Brian Thompson, Eric Ostmoe, Brian Gilbert-son

Last year — 13-7 conference, 20-9 overall

Captains — Clay Elrod, Mitchell Weege

Returning starters — Elrod (sr F), Zach Ernst (jr G)

Other returning lettermen — Weege (jr G), Matt Keller (so G)

Also in the mix — Wyatt Schuster (sr), Austin O’Leary (sr), JJ Haywood (jr), Devill Miller (jr), Alec Hills (jr), Trent Pink (so), Lucas Trapp (so)

Coach says — “Strength will be team speed and quickness. We will be a very good defensive team. We have to be able to rebound and defend against teams that have a strong interior game.  We lack experience to start the season and many of our players are adjusting to new roles and new responsibilities. We will get a lot stronger as the season goes on.”

Outlook — The Elks, section runners-up last, had heavy graduation losses, but can rebuild around the 6-foot-6 Elrod, who enters his senior year with 1,111 career points. Keller and Weege are the point guards.
