Susan Jeanette Young, 65, of Zimmerman, MN died at home on Saturday, November 16, 2013, following her third battle with cancer over the past 7 years.
A memorial celebration of her life will be held at the Washburn-McReavy Funeral Home in Robbinsdale, MN on Saturday, November 30, 2013, 1-4 p.m.
Sue was born in Tomah, WI to William and Carol Graham. She was a member of the 1966 class of Lincoln High School in Lake City, MN and attended Winona State College. She was married to Robert Dean (Bob) Oelkers from 1969 to 1980, during which time they had two children. Sue married Scott Young on October 18, 1991 in Brooklyn Center, MN. Her professional career of accounting and office administration included 12 years with Anchor Inn in Lake City and Shakopee, MN and 25 years with Earth Tech, Inc. in Maple Grove and Plymouth, MN. A prolific volunteer, Sue provided years of service to the International Order of Jobs Daughters; educational support to the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MOCA); weekly support to Fairview Northland Infusion Center, Fairview Northland Medical-Surgical Unit, and Fairview Hospice-Princeton; made numerous quilts for Project Linus; and served as a respite care provider to several patients for Fairview Hospice-Princeton.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling, crosswords & Sudoku; and was a dedicated quilter and voracious reader. Sue was happiest spending time with her family and friends, as well as her two dogs, Maxie and Hershey.
Sue is survived by her husband, Scott, of Zimmerman, MN; son, Chris Oelkers, of Waterloo, IA; daughter, Jackie (Zach) Norling, of Minneapolis; sister, Pattie (Terry) Heimer, of Lake City; step-sister, Becky Brennan (Terry Bement) of North Mankato; 5 grandchildren, Emma, CJ, Luke, Ozzy and Kate; uncle, Charles Bud (Elaine) Graham, of St. Louis Park; cousin, Steve; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents and parents; step-mother, JoAnne Graham; and step-sister, Jane (Calvin) Johnson.
