Volleyball: Thunder start strong but lose to Pirates 3-2, season ends

The Zimmerman Thunder won the first two games but could not finish the job as the Park Center Pirates took over the match and 24-26, 22-25, 25-15, 25-14, 15-6 in the third round of Section 5AA on Thursday evening.

The Thunder season ended with a 13-15 record including two section wins. Park Center (18-12) advanced to the section finals.

Zimmerman took the close first game at St. Michael-Albertville when Brooke Borchardt landed an ace on the back line for a 25-24 lead and Gabby Antolak slapped down a kill for the 26th point.

The Thunder then rolled to an 18-15 lead in the second game, making few mistakes as the Pirates committed many unforced errors.

However, the Pirates got back in the groove an almost pulled out game two, which ended 25-22 on another Antolak kill.

The Pirates’ momentum continued as they took control in the next three games to win easily while the Thunder lost their composure and made numerous errors. Jessica Verlander, a springy 5-8 senior outside hitter, was the big force at the net the last three games for Park Center.
