Cross country: Thunder’s Gagne, Jeandron, Jurik qualify for state

In its third year of cross country, Zimmerman has its first state entrants. In fact, three of them.

Thunder sophomores Connor Gagne and Jordan Jeandron and junior Nicole Jurik all qualified at the Section 7AA meet on Thursday at Cloquet Country Club.

Gagne placed 11th (16:47) and Jeandron 12th (16:48.9) in the boys race, while junior Jurik placed 13th place (15:21) in the girls race.

The boys took the last two qualifying spots in the boys race and Jurik snagged the last spot in the girls race, coach Mike Back noted.

In team standings, the Thunder girls placed 11th and the boys 12th among 16 teams.

“Connor and Jordan dropped 40 to 50 seconds off their personal bests,” said Back. “All my runners had personal bests today.”

Zimmerman ran with incomplete teams much of the year as Back let his younger, inexperienced kids develop in JV races.

The Thunder trio will run at the state Class AA meet Saturday, Nov. 2, at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

Other boys counting scores were Mitch Gagne in 76th (18:49), Chase Laxdal 87th (19:13) and Jacob Gagne 103rd (20:21).

Other girls counting scores were Cheresa Bouley in 37th place (16:21), Kelsie Tufto 44th (16:32), Summer Peoples 62nd (16:59) and Kelsey Forster 91st (18:13).
