Elk River’s Laura Ryan was among 11 University of Georgia student-athletes inducted into the college’s Student-Athlete Leadership Academy on Monday, Oct. 21.
Ryan, a senior diver, was picked to represent the women’s swimming team. She helped the Bulldogs capture the NCAA championship last March when she placed fifth in platform diving and 12th in 3-meter diving.
The psychology major is a former state champion for the Elks and three-time AAU national champion.
This July, she placed fifth, highest of any American, in 10-meter the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.
The student-athletes were chosen based on academic and athletic success, leadership, campus and community service involvement, and recommendations of head coaches and academic counselors.
Members of the leadership academy are entrusted to encourage leadership development and have a chance to meet with local, state and industry leaders. They are provided with resources to compete for conference and national awards and postgraduate scholarships, such as NCAA Woman of the Year award.
