Elk River and Andover, both of the Northwest Suburban Conference, are the only Class AA schools with state tournament teams in both boys and girls soccer.
The Elk River boys, paired with Zimmerman, and the Elk River girls won Section 8AA championships, in each case with a finals victory over a team that beat them previously. The boys beat Anoka 1-0 in overtime and the girls nipped St. Michael-Albertville 1-0 (5-4) in a shootout.
The Andover boys and girls each won Section 2 titles. The Huskie boys beat Centennial 2-1 in the finals after Centennial upset NWSC champ and top-seeded Blaine 2-1. The Huskie girls beat Coon Rapids in a shootout 4-2 in the finals.
The Maple Grove boys were top-seeded in Section 5 but lost in the finals to No. 6 Prairie Seeds Academy 2-0. The Lycans also beat No. 3 Osseo 1-0 in the first round. The Brooklyn Center charter school won the Class A championship two years ago, was expelled from the state tournament last year, and opted up to Class 2A this year.
Prairie Seeds (14-0) is the lone unbeaten in the boys field. Mounds View (18-0) and Burnsville (16-0-3) are unbeaten in the girls field.
