The Elk River Elks, emerging from a daunting regular-season schedule with a 2-6 record, hope to duplicate last year’s success in playoffs, which begin Tuesday.
The defending Section 6-5A champions are seeded fifth and will open at No. 3 Monticello (5-3) on Tuesday, 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, the unbeaten, top-seeded Rogers Royals’ quest is to regain the section crown which eluded them last year when they were also top-seeded but lost to the Elks 53-42 in the semifinals. Rogers had gone to state the previous three years.
The Elks were seeded fifth last year, too, but defeated Willmar, Rogers and St. Michael-Albertville for the championship, then lost to St. Thomas Academy in the state tournament.
The Elks’ losses this year came against six Class 6A teams with a combined record of 38-10, but it’s all 5A teams from now on.
Rogers, which returned almost everyone from last year’s 7-2 team, cruised through seven games this year before getting into a spectacular shootout with St. Michael-Albertville in the conference finale, winning 38-37 in overtime. Rogers and STMA are seeded one-two with byes on Tuesday.
If the Elks beat Monticello, there will be an Elks-Royals semifinal rematch on Saturday in Rogers, 3 p.m.
