The Albany Huskies pounded the ball straight ahead and broke tackles all game in rolling to a 43-23 victory over the Zimmerman Thunder in the conference finale on Wednesday evening.
Shane Olmscheid ran for three touchdowns while quarterback Taylor Fourre ran for two more and threw a TD pass to Nick Raeker for the Huskies (3-5) in Albany.
“Our defense had a difficult time stopping Albany’s ground game,” said coach Tom Kish. “They only had one run of over 20 yards, but were consistently gaining four to seven yards, almost every run … They probably had 80 to 100 yards after first contact with our defenders. Albany’s offense was just more physical than our defense.”
The Thunder offense didn’t get on the field much but in their limited time looked good, said Kish, with Taylor Snow at quarterback most of the game, running a productive option attack. Noah Lunning and Austin May scored on short runs.
Mack Riley broke a kickoff return 77 yards for a touchdown. The Thunder also had a pair 35-yard punt returns, by Andrew Nixon and Trent Milless.
The Thunder finished 2-5 in the Granite Ridge and will take a 2-6 record into Section 5AAAA on Tuesday. Kish said the likely opponent is Big Lake (2-6) and will probably be at Big Lake.
