Cross country: Spectrum girls were close runner-up in conference

The Spectrum girls were runners-up and the boys placed fourth in their five-team conference meet on Thursday at Bassett Creek Park in Crystal.

Trinity at River Ridge, ranked No. 4 in Class A, edged the Sting girls 36 to 40, followed by Math and Science Academy  57, St. Croix Prep 97 and Maranatha Christian 136.

“The girls ran their best race of the season and finished a close second to a number four ranked team,” said coach Rick Peterson.

Trinity’s Becca Wilkin won in 14:58, followed by Grace Ennis in 15:14.

Spectrum’s Kayla Zimmerman was third (15:14), a split second behind Ennis. Elizabeth Hackbarth was fifth (15:33), Becca Peterson seventh (15:49), Brittany Waterhuse 10th (16:13) and Marissa Kuik 15th (16:49).

Boys team scoring was Trinity 41, Math and Science Academy 55, Southwest Christian 60, Spectrum 86 and Heritage Christian 114.

Jake Pettit of SWC won in 16:48.

Spectrum was led by Zachary Anderson in third place (16:35) and Nevin Sagstetter in 18th (18:45). Both are eighth-graders.

This conference meet includes schools from the Minnesota Christian Conference and Minnesota Christian Athletic Association that have cross country teams.
