An upbeat Zimmerman Thunder soccer season ended too quickly with a 6-3 loss to the Esko Eskomos at home on Thursday.
“The girls grew so much this season, it is just a real disappointment to realize it is over,” said coach Jeff Downing.
Brooke Salo scored twice on penalty kicks for the Thunder, who fell behind 3-0 and couldn’t catch up.
The Thunder finished 9-6-2 for the program’s first winning season. They were conference runners-up, and were seeded eighth among 13 in Section 7A to earn their first playoff home game, against the No. 9 Eskomos.
“Our seniors were tremendous role models and great leaders on the field and in the classroom,” said Downing. “On many levels, this has been one of our most successful seasons.”
Kadee Karkkainen scored twice for Esko (7-8-2) and Erika Shady, Bailey Mudek, Elle Emanuel and Kailey Buhr once each.
Camilla Johansson got the Thunder on the board in the 45th minute, scoring off a cross from Maddie Jacob. Salo scored in the 52nd after a handball in the box and in the 57th after a hard tackle in the box.
But Esko kept scoring, too.
