The first-place Centennial Cougars stymied Elk River 2-0 on Thursday evening in Circle Pines, snapping string of three straight shutout wins by the Elks.
The Elks gave up an own goal in the 10th minute, deflecting a ball into the net off a corner kick. Centennial scored again in the 34th minute on a nice crossing pass in front of the net.
Centennial is 7-0-1 in the NWSC and 9-3-1 overall. The Elks dropped to 4-3-1 in conference and 6-5-1 overall.
The Elks had wind at their backs in the second half and put more pressure on the Cougars but missed on a couple of close-range scoring chances.
Next for the Elks is a home game vs. Rogers, which leads their conference, on Saturday at 1 p.m., following a boys game at 11 a.m.
