Soccer: Thunder girls deadlock with first-place Cathedral 2-2

It was a beautiful evening for a soccer game, commented Zimmerman coach Jeff Downing, adding, “We hope this weather holds up for a more more weeks!”

The result of the match was lovely, too, as the Thunder battled first-place St. Cloud Cathedral to a 2-2 draw at home Tuesday, extending their unbeaten streak to four games.

“This game will give us some momentum,” said the coach, “and confidence that we are good enough to beat teams that look better on paper.”

Camilla Johansson and Brooke Salo scored for Zimmerman (2-1-2 conference, 6-5-2 overall).

Ellie Engel knocked in two goals for the Crusaders (5-0-1 conference, 7-2-1 overall).

The Thunder led 1-0 at the half as Johansson scored in the 18th minute, assisted by Maddie Jacobs. Cathedral was awarded a penalty kick in the 46th minute and Engel delivered.

Zimmerman came close on two shots before Engel slipped behind two defenders to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead in the 58th minute.

The Thunder pulled even when Salo took a nice in-stride pass from Jamie Pensinger and blasted a long shot into the net in the 68th minute.

“This was a lift for us,” said Downing, “and we had a couple more developed plays that nearly resulted in scores.”

Each goalkeeper did solid work in overtime to keep the score tied.

Zimmerman will play at Becker on Thursday at 7 p.m.
