Soccer: Elk girls shade Armstrong 1-0; third straight shutout

The Elk River girls posted their third straight shutout and scraped out a 1-0 win over Robbinsdale Armstrong on a goal by Monet Cairns at home Tuesday evening.

“We are playing a full 80 minutes now,” said coach Brian Steuter about the defensive success that’s pushed the Elks record to 4-2-1 in conference and 6-4-1 overall.

The defensive crew of Lizzy Holien, Jenna Kivley and Emma Tritten in the back, with Sydney Olson or her backup Kalen Weidenbach in front of them, permitted little pressure on the goal, except for one shot from way out that almost hit. Goalie Megan Marsh leapt and tipped that ball up.

Cairns, sophomore forward, scored in the 60th minute on a set-up from Logan Daulton. A through ball was picked up by Daulton racing down the sideline, and she cut inside and centered to Cairns, who buried a short for the game’s lone goal.

Dauton came close twice to adding to her season total of 11 goals but one shot just missed and the Falcon goalie deflected another shot.

Armstrong is 2-3-2 in the conference and 3-5-2 overall.

The Elks will play at Centennial on Thursday.
