Corner kicks by Joey Benz set up both goals as Elk River-Zimmerman stayed unbeaten at home with a 2-0 conquest of Robbinsdale Armstrong on Tuesday evening.
The Elks notched their fifth shutout and got goals from Rob Burger and Storm Heyer.
“It was nice to get that two-goal lead,” said coach Aaron Lindquist, hearkening to the Elks’ last six games which include four wins and a loss by a single goal each, plus a tie.
The Elks are 5-1-1 in the Northwest Suburban Conference, 8-1-2 overall and 4-0-2 at home. Armstrong is 2-4-1 conference and 3-6-1 overall.
With Benz serving them up, Burger scored on a header in the 15th minute, and Heyer logged his 11th goal with a mid-air deflection off the inside of his right foot in the 65th minute.
“That’s a play we’ve been working on in practice,” said Lindquist about the Heyer goal.
The Elks defense continues to shine. They’ve allowed just seven goals in 11 games. Armstrong had no shots on goal in the first half although they generated some pressure in the second half.
