Football: Thunder fall short against Foley, Kelvington 53-35

An onside kick ruling was a pivotal factor in a freewheeling game of big plays by both teams as the Foley Falcons fended of Zimmerman 53-35 Friday night.

Luke Kelvington scored six touchdowns and rushed for 230 yards to keep Foley in front in the Granite Ridge Conference game.

Zimmerman trailed 41-35 with six minutes left after Noah Lunning scored his third touchdown, on an eight-yard run, and Matt Dorso dived in for the two-point conversion.

The Thunder (1-3) then tried an onside kick which almost was successful.

“We recovered and it appeared to go at least 10 yards,” said Thunder coach Tom Kish. “However, the refs conferred and awarded Foley the ball.”

Foley (3-1) drove 40 yards and got Kelvington’s final TD on a two-yard plunge, then wrapped it up with their final big play, Tyler Beehler’s interception of a Dorso pass and 51-yard return for a touchdown.

Lunning also scored on  25-yard run and on a 66-yard pass play from Dorso. The senior back ran 18 times for 128 yards.

The Thunder ran for 250 yards and passed for 95.

“Our offense really moved the ball well all night and continues to get better each week,” said Kish.

Kelvington carried 33 times and scored from 28, nine, five, five and two yards, while snagging a pass from Beehler for a 58-yard score.

Foley also got a 99-yard kick return from Beehler.

“Foley’s offense had too much speed at the skill positions for us,” said Kish. “We hurt ourselves with a few mistakes, due to inexperience, and it was one of those games where every close call seemed to go against us.”

In conference play, Zimmerman is 1-2 and Foley 1-1.

The Thunder will play at Little Falls next Friday.
