The Rogers Royals threw the ball exceptionally well and shut down Duluth East’s air game completely in a 52-6 rout of the Greyhounds on Friday evening in Duluth.
Royal quarterback Connor Henderson hit nine of 10 passes for 204 yards, with Gunnar Bloom snagging four of 123 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown.
The Royals picked off three of Duluth East’s eight throws, the first of those returned by Adam Heyer 15 yards for a touchdown. Nate Weber and Cole Flander had the other interceptions. The Greyhounds and one yard passing.
“The team played pretty well and a lot of guys got to touch the ball,” said coach Marc Franz. “When a lot of guys look good, that shows the offensive line is doing a good job.”
Guard Joel Ende threw a perfect open-field block that sprang Bloom’s touchdown on a screen pass.
“That play really got the sideline excited,” said Franz.
The Mississippi 8 Conference game on the shore of Lake Superior was a mismatch between a 4-0 team and an 0-4 team.
Rogers rushed for a modest 135 yards but had five TD’s on the ground, by Travis Dietl (two, Jake Owens, Bloom and Isaiah Fofanah.
Isaac Aanerud booted a 38-yard field goal and was 7-for-7 on conversions.
“We know we have much tougher games ahead than we’ve had in the first half of the season,” said Franz. “We want the kids to challenge themselves and develop good practice habits.”
Rogers will host Cambridge-Isanti (3-1) on Friday.
