Soccer: Princeton tips Thunder girls 2-0 with late goals

The Princeton Tigers broke up a scoreless game with two late goals and handed the Zimmerman Thunder a 2-0 loss on Monday evening, under the lights in the Tigers new stadium.

In the 70th minute, eighth-grader Lydia Arens was in the right spot to put home a loose ball from close range. In the 71st minute, freshman Maggie Peterson scored in a similar situation. Neither goal was assisted.

Thunder coach Jeff Downing said it was a nice evening in the new facility and a fun game.

“We actually won most of the 50/50 balls and moved the ball very well,” he said. “We are still learning how and when to make runs to create quality finishing opportunities.”

Most of┬átheir shots were from long range and handled easily by the Tiger goalkeeper. The Thunder won a couple of corner kicks in the second half that produced good chances but couldn’t capitalize.”

A busy week for the Thunder (3-5-1) will continue with road games against Big Lake Tuesday, St. John’s Prep on Thursday, and Eveleth-Gilbert Saturday.
