Football: Rogers is 3-0 after outlasting St. Francis 42-32

Gunnar Bloom scored three touchdowns during a string of 42 straight points by the Rogers Royals as they stayed unbeaten with a 42-32 conquest of St. Francis on Friday evening.

“It was a game of streaks,” said Rogers coach Marc Franz.

The Fighting Saints (1-2) started and finished strong as they led 12-0 after one quarter, then racked up 20 points in the fourth quarter after falling behind 42-12.

“St. Francis is a really good football team,” said Franz.  “They’re very physical, they’ve got tall receivers that give you matchup problems, and a sophomore quarterback who throws exceptionally well.”

The Saints scored twice before Rogers got its hands on the ball, with Nick Gust dashing 46 yards for a TD, followed by a successful onside kick, and a one-yard TD by Dom Dejarlais.

Bloom turned it around with TD runs of 41 and 40 yards in the second quarter, and capped Rogers scoring on a 15-yard pass from Connor Henderson in the third quarter. Bloom rambled for 164 yards in 10 carries.

Henderson hit Adam Heyer for a 32-yard score, and Nate Weber scored on runs of eight and 19 yards, for the Royals (3-0), who racked up 21 points in the both second and third quarters.

The Royals rushed for 337 yards and passed for 84 while making no turnovers.

Gust carried 17 times for 117 yards and two touchdowns for the Saints. He also hit Blake Moreno with a halfback pass that went 81 yards for a TD to close the scoring.

That long TD pulled the Saints within 42-32 with four minutes left. They used a squib kickoff every time, and had they recovered another one at that point they could  have made it pretty interesting. Rogers fielded the kickoff, however, and ran out the clock.

Fighting Saints quarterback Hunter Trautman hit 8 of 12 passes for 95 yards. Moreno caught three for 115 yards and two scores.

Rogers will play at Duluth East next Friday.
