An early goal by Coon Rapids stood up as the Cardinals shut out the Elk River Elks 1-0 on Tuesday evening in Coon Rapids.
“Not a good one for us,” said Elk coach Brian Steuter. “They play a defensive style and kept a number of players behind our backs, and we didn’t handle it well.”
Allie Erickson scored in the 20th minute on a counter attack, hitting a shot from about 15 yards.
The Elks lost Madyson St. Germaine, who had scored in three straight games, with an ankle injury late in the first half.
“That didn’t help. We had to move people around and make adjustments,” said Steuter.
The Elks had a penalty kick with seven minutes left but missed, leaving the score 1-1.
Elk River and Coon Rapids have been splitting the last few years, each always winning at home. Steuter noted that the Elks have not won at Coon Rapids during his coaching tenure.
The Elks dropped to 1-2 in conference, 3-4 overall. Coon Rapids is 3-1 and 4-2.
The Elks will host Blaine on Thursday.
