Isaac Aanerud scored five goals as the Rogers Royals picked up their first win 6-0 over the Monticello Magic on Tuesday in Rogers.
“That was quite the night,” said Aanerud, a fifth-year starter with 11 previous varsity goals, none this year. “The first two came quickly, and after that we got into a real good rhythm and the guys were seeing me and was able to put them in the back of the net.”
Coach Chris Miller said Aanerud’s five goals against the Magic (2-2-1) broke the team record of four held by Austin Koeppe and Nico Salas-Velazquez.
Aanerud scored twice in the first half, both times taking a pass from Nahome Biniam on the outside and powering past the defender for a solid shot.
In the second half, with Monticello making a goal kick, the ball went right toward Aanerud and he intercepted and fired it back into the net.
He swiped the ball from a defender six yards from the goal and scored for the fourth time.
Aanerud’s fifth goal came off a feed from Alfonso Tolbert on the outside. He got past the defender and shot a rocket from an angle just outside the 18 box.
Mike Biah had the other goal in the second half, a shot into the corner of the net, set up by a ball from midfielder Logan Olkon.
Royal goalie C.J. Rich made several good saves including one from less than three feet away on a corner kick, which Rich blocked with his foot.
Aanerud had nine goals as a midfielder last year, and two in grades 8 through 10 as a defender.
He had missed Saturday’s 8-3 loss to Osseo with a shoulder injury making a tackle in the football game against Buffalo the night before. He’s the football team’s kicker.
This was the conference opener for Rogers (1-5). Monticello is 0-1-1 in conference and 2-2-1 overall.
Rogers will play at St. Francis on Thursday, 7 p.m.
