Soccer: Elk defense stout again in 1-0 win over STMA

Elk River-Zimmerman capped off a stellar week by its defensive corps by defeating St. Michael-Albertville 1-0 on Saturday in St. Michael.

The Elks (4-1-1) gave up just one goal in three games, and would have had three shutouts had they not been blanked themselves by Anoka and lost 1-0 in overtime on Wednesday. They beat Andover 3-0 on Tuesday.

Storm Heyer provided the lone goal in the 65th minute on a play starting with a cross from Jordan Griffith which was touched by Joey Benz toward Heyer who ripped it into the net.

“We did not allow a shot on goal today,” said coach Aaron Lindquist. “Cody Christ (goalkeeper) got his hands on a few crosses but there were no tough shots to block.”

The defensive crew includes Trevor Riebel, Tanner Beckerleg, Emmanuel Kai, Rob Burger and Mitchell Weege.

The Elks improved to 3-0 against section rivals. The Knights remained winless at 0-4-1.

The Elks will play at Coon Rapids on Tuesday.
