So far this season, the only thing that’s been able to stop the Rogers offense is lightning.
The Royals romped 61-7 over the Buffalo Bison at home Friday evening with seven different guys scoring touchdowns.
The Royals have racked up 103 points in just six quarters. Their 42-7 win at North Branch a week earlier was stopped at halftime because a lightning storm wouldn’t let up. Buffalo had no such luck on Friday night.
“I don’t really know how we got to 61 points,” said coach Marc Franz. “We came out and played real well at the beginning of the game. We were subbing a lot. The guys who get in later in the game, they want to compete, too. That’s a credit to our depth, the guys playing behind the starters.”
Rogers led 35-0 at halftime. Subs racked up three touchdowns in the last quarter.
Gunnar Bloom opened the scoring with a 54-yard run, and later snagged a 30-yard TD pass from Connor Henderson. The junior halfback totaled 117 yards in seven rushes and 65 in three catches.
Rogers piled up 308 rushing yards with 12 players carrying. Nate Weber had 64 yards and two TD’s in seven totes. Henderson nailed five of seven passes for 116 yards.
The Royals had a defensive touchdown when lineman Trent Rgonti scooped up a fumble that was forced by Trevor Schultz and ran five yards to the end zone.
Another big defensive play was junior Cole Flander picking off a pass in the end zone and returning it past midfield, when Buffalo had third and goal at the five while trailing 28-0.
The Bison suffered six turnovers. They averted the shutout when Joseph Johnson got loose for a 97-yard touchdown early in the second quarter.
Rogers will meet conference newcomer St. Francis there next Friday.
