Football: Becker downs Thunder 34-10

by Bruce Strand, Sports editor

The Becker Bulldogs took charge in the second and fourth quarters and tumbled the Zimmerman Thunder 34-10 on Friday evening in Zimmerman.

Will Cody threw touchdown passes to Tyler Lambert and Robbie Benson, while Josh Nohner, Austin Soare and Milan Kent ran for TD’s, for the Bulldogs (1-1).
Zimmerman opened the scoring with Alex MacGregor booming a 46-yard field goal in the first quarter.

Becker scored twice in three minutes early in the second quarter, sandwiched around an interception that was returned to the Bulldog seven. The Bulldogs led 20-3 at halftime.

The Thunder were held to 33 net yards rushing, although they picked up some passing yardage in the second half with Matt Dorso finishing 6-for-13 for 110 yards in relief of Taylor Snow. Nick Hasslen caught seven for 99 yards and Craig Steiskal snagged an 18-yard touchdown pass.

“We did some real positive things tonight and got better from last week,” said coach Tom Kish, referring to an erratic showing in a 19-7 loss at Fridley. “We did a better job of protecting the football and our line improved in pass protection.”

On defense, the Thunder “played fast and matched Becker’s offense physically,” said the coach, but the Bulldogs made them pay for a couple breakdowns.
The Thunder were missing strong safety Mack Riley, a solid tackler, who was injured in practice but should be back next week.

Zimmerman has homecoming next week against Mora.
