Both Elk River cross country teams placed 12th in the season-opening Hopkins Bauman-Rovn Invitational on Wednesday.
“We were working our way through this meet,” said coach Mike Niziolek. “It was kind of warm. The meet was Wednesday instead of Thursday. We usually do a hard workout Monday. It was a challenging day.”
The Elk boys were 12th among 17 teams at Gale Woods park in Minnetrista, with Eden Prairie, Armstrong and Hopkins placing 1-2-3.
Lucas Trapp placed 12th and Breck Hickman 27th to lead the Elks.
On a warm, humid day in the high 80′s, several Elks had hydration issues, most notable Jeremy Hanson, who collapsed within a body length of the finish, right behind Hickman, and had to be hospitalized, said Niziolek.
The Elk girls were 12th among 16 teams, with Eden Prairie first, followed by Chanhassen and Lakeville South.
Rachel Ness placed 27th and Kari Radke 34th to lead the Elks.
Shakopee’s Tessa Misgen won the girls race in 15:00 and Richfield’s Obsa Ali won the boys race in 16:14.
Next for the Elks is the St. Francis meet on Thursday, Sept. 11.
