Two goals by Logan Daulton helped the Elk River Elks pull out a 3-1 win over the Moorhead Spuds after a 3 1/2 drive on Thursday.
Monet Cairns had the other goal and Courtney Grunewald was in the nets as the Elks improved to 2-1.
After a scoreless first half, Cairns put the ball in the net after stealing it off the foot of a Spud defender. The junior forward touched toward the goal and hit the far post.
Moorhead knotted the score on a free kick but Daulton struck twice late in the game.
The senior forward stole the ball from a defender and outraced her to the net, hitting the far side for a 2-1 lead in the 60th minute. She made it 3-1 with a header after Lizzie Holien set her up with a crossing pass to the near post in the 70th minute.
Moorhead closed the gap with a goal on a scrum in front of the net in the 75th minute.
Coach Brian Steuter said Grunewald, a sophomore in her varsity debut, had a solid game, including a couple of stretched-out saves. She got the start when Meagan Marsh had a PSEO class.
Elk River’s lone loss was 3-0 to defending state champion and top-ranked Wayzata on Tuesday. The Elks will open conference against Andover at home next Tuesday.
