Parties need plan for people’s safety

There is nothing more important than keeping your family and friends safe. As a Toward Zero Deaths Safe Roads Coalition, we work closely in our community to ensure everyone makes safe driving decisions to avoid driving impaired.

In 2008, Sherburne County began the C.R.A.S.H. — Collision Reduction And Safe Highways program. Officers and deputies from Sherburne County, Big Lake, Becker, Elk River, Princeton and the State Patrol work together in a high visibility enforcement effort to get drunk drivers off of our streets. This targeted enforcement will be occurring how through the beginning of September on our Sherburne County roadways allowing extra patrols to focus on unsafe driving behaviors. This program is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety.

Drinking and driving has serious and complicated consequences. Possible crashes with injury or death, as well as lawyers, court, fees, and jail time. Planning for a safe and sober ride is simple. Use a sober, designated driver or public transportation, or spend the night at the location of the celebration.

If you are planning to party, please plan in advance how you and your friends will get home safely. Make smart decisions and keep our roads safe. — Lt. Sam Olson, Big Lake Police Department
