Sylvia Rose Senger, 86, Elk River died Thursday, July 25, 2013, at the Guardian Angels Care Center in Elk River after a short stay.
Sylvia Rose Flicek was born August 9, 1926, to James and Rose (Ruzicka) Flicek on a farm near Mahnomen, the oldest of six children.
She attended country school for eight years and graduated from Mahnomen High School in 1944. After attending Detroit Lakes Business College, she worked as a secretary at the Mahnomen County Welfare Office until her marriage to August Becker in October 1945. She was a farm wife for three years raising two children and expecting a third when her husband was killed in a car/truck collision. In 1960, she moved to East Grand Forks, Minn. and worked as a legal secretary for 18 years. In 1974, she married Wendlin “Wendy” Senger, a widower from Grand Forks with three children of his own. Several years later, they moved to the Big Lake area where she again worked as a legal secretary and finally to Elk River in 1990. Following Wendy’s death in 2000, Sylvia continued to live in her Guardian Oaks apartment. In June 2013, Sylvia was hospitalized a short time as she had developed a serious health problem requiring her to move to hospice at the Guardian Angels Care Center.
Sylvia enjoyed sewing, reading, and dancing. She also loved having coffee with relatives and friends. For many years, she was a member of Legal Secretaries Association, VFW Auxiliary, Catholic Order of Foresters and Catholic Daughters of America.
