Jordan Hollom and Sam Wirtz homered, and Brandon Meyer delivered a two-run single, as Elk River Legion rallied to beat Maple Grove 5-4 in their playoff opener Thursday at Osseo.
Terry Hadden pitched eight innings and Brady Givens finished for the Elks. Legion baseball switches from seven to nine innings in playoffs.
The No. 6 seeded Elks (12-11) rallied from a 4-0 deficit against No. 3 Maple Grove. They’ll play again Friday against the winner of Delano vs. St. Michael-Albertville. The double-elimination tourney continues Saturday and Sunday.
Hollom’s homer to left field in the sixth got the Elks on the board. Wirtz pulled them within 4-3 in the seventh with a homer to left after Givens singled.
Erik Nyquist and Mylo Hommes each singled to start the eighth, moved up on a ground out, and scored on Meyer’s hit to right field for the lead.
Nyquist was 3-for-5 and Meyer 2-for-4 as the Elks outhit the Crimson 10-8.
Hadden gave up four runs (two earned) in eight innings, on seven hits and three walks, while striking out six. Givens gave up a hit and struck out two in posting the save.
