Patti Granning has enjoyed seeing her daughter and husband interviewed by the local press for their golf exploits a number of times. On Sunday it was mom’s turn, as Granning teamed with Lou Dybdahl to win the Companions Classic at Elk River Golf Club.

“It helped that I stole three clubs from McKayla’s bag,” said Granning, referring to her daughter. “Her driver, a hybrid and a No. 3.”

Granning and Dybdahl totaled 203 to win by three strokes in a field of 11 teams.

“Today, on the front nine, we both played well,” said Dybdahl. “On the back nine, we each had a couple of bad balls.”

Granning and Dybdahl shot 62 net in the best-ball on Saturday and 141 net Sunday.

“Yesterday, if I had a bad shot, she had a good one,” said Granning, “and if she had a bad shot, I had a good one.”

Their raw scores Sunday were 101 for Dybdahl and 96 for Granning, whose 66 net was low for the day. Each had a birdie — Dybdahl with a chip-in to the cup on No. 8, and Granning with a downhill putt from just off the green on No. 13.

This was the first golf title for both. Granning has a long association with ERGC as she and husband Paul both play (he won ERGC seniors low net last year) and daughter McKayla was an all-conference shooter for the Elks. Dybdahl, meanwhile, joined ERGC just last fall.

Dybdahl said her dad used to take her along golfing when she was little, but she got involved in softball, and “there wasn’t much golf in between” until she started playing more the last couple of years. “There’s more time for golf now,” she said, “with my kids away at college.”

Granning played the Companions several years with Vicki Sizen, but Sizen sat this one out, minding her newborn grandson while her daughter, son-in-law and husband all played. So Granning teamed with Dybdahl, with good results.

Jody Conrath and Sandy Grupa were runners-up with 206. Gloria Jenson and Greta Ege took third at 207. Tying for fourth place at 210 were Melissa Jackson/Amy Lord and Diane Sanford/Candace Johnson.

After the best-ball round Saturday, Jackson and Lord were leaders with 61, followed by Granning/Dybdahl with 62 and Jenson/Ege with 63.

Jenson, two-time ERGC club champion, was the low gross shooter Sunday with 85, followed by Michelle Olson with 87 and Grupa with 89.
