Thanks for making flag retirement a success

I would like the thank all the patriotic citizens who helped retire just under 1,000 flags with dignity on June 14 at Veteran’s Lake. The Elk River Legion Post 112 Honor Guard rifle salute to the flags was highlighted with the firing of an original Revolutionary War 6-pound cannon from the 1700s! The cannon is owned and fired by Paul Eggleston of Milaca. A special thanks to Mike Lemke of Nelson Nursery in Zimmerman for a huge donation of thousands of flowers for the Purple Heart Garden and all the other flower gardens in Veteran’s Park. Another thank you goes to Elk River Home Depot for supplies needed to refurbish “Gl George,” a monument who helps guard our monuments. Many thanks also to the volunteers who helped make the day a success. — John Enstrom, Veteran’s Lake in Ramsey
