Tennis: Wetherille wins NWSC singles tourney title here

Joe Wetherille emerged as champion of the Northwest Suburban Conference singles tournament Tuesday in Elk River, beating three Elk River teammates among his five wins for the day.

Wetherille, senior-to-be, edged Isaac Johnson, Anoka freshman-to-be, in the finals 10-9 (8-6). Johnson, who played No. 2 for Anoka this spring, won the NWSC tournament in Coon Rapids last week.

Wetherille reached finals of the 32-player field beating Sam Skoglund of Anoka 10-4, Grant Hanson of Elk River 10-2, Jordan Haack of Elk River 10-5, and Nathan Chanthamontry of Elk Rver 10-4.

Noah Steichen of Elk River finished 4-1 for third place. He lost to Johnson in the semifinals 10-3, and topped Chanthamontry 6-4 in a one-set, third-place match.

NWSC tournaments are held throughout the summer at various sites. Elk River will host a girls tournament in July.

Mark Schatza and Patrick Gallagher of Anoka won doubles on Monday. Haack and Tyler Creelman of Elk River placed third among 14 teams.
