A “free will” benefit garage sale for Jonah Skrove will be held Saturday, June 29, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 23485 112th St. NW in Elk River (between Elk River and Zimmerman, east of Highway 169).
Jonah, a senior at Zimmerman High School, was diagnosed in September 2012 with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer that primarily strikes teenage boys during growth spurts. Out of over 2 million cancers diagnosed each year, only 800 are this particular type of cancer.
On Dec. 14, 2012, Jonah had his lower right leg removed to maximize his chances for recovery. He is in week 32 of his chemotherapy schedule and isn’t expected to be done with it until August. This will be followed by an additional surgery on his leg to do some repair.
Through everything, he continues to have an upbeat, can’t-lose attitude, always putting others before himself. Every chemotherapy week, he goes in wearing a different costume, to make the other kids laugh.
Jonah’s family is expecting to have medical expenses out of pocket close to $40,000, plus many other expenses. In addition, the time they spend with him in the hospital on chemotherapy weeks is unpaid, not to mention the added expenses of gas and food.
