Elk River Legion baseball has a 3-0 record for its first week of action after surviving a seventh-inning rally by Big Lake on Thursday evening, 5-4.
Porter Morrell threw five shutout innings and Brady Givens blanked the Hornets in the sixth.But in the seventh, the Mississippi 8 champs scored four runs with two outs. They loaded the bases on a single and two walks from Givens, got three runs on a fly to right center that was dropped after a long run, and another run on a double to left. A ground out ended the game.
Alex Babcock knocked in two runs with a double for Elk River. Erik Nyquist singled home a run.
The Elks have also beaten Zimmerman 9-0 with Jordan Hollom pitching, and Becker 12-0 with Nyquist pitching.
“We’ve got 16 to 18 guys, with a nice mix of juniors getting experience for high school next year and five seniors getting ready for their next level,” said Lance Johnson, assistant coach. “We’ve got close to 10 guys who can pitch. That’s an issue for us, finding innings for all those guys.”
Head coach is Skip Swanson who’s currently on vacation.
