Zimmerman’s outstanding hurdler Cassie Ortberg had a disappointing career finale Saturday at the state track meet, tripping early in the race and finishing last, at Hamline.
Ortberg was second in last year’s state meet and held fourth place after prelims on Friday with 44.85. After the fall she limped around the track in 59:35.
Ortberg placed ninth in long jump Friday with 16-7 3/4. A four-time state qualifier, she also had a fifth-place 300H finish in 10th grade.
Amber Magnussen, Zimmerman’s other entrant, placed 13th in shot put with 36-10. A first-time state qualifier as senior, she had her personal-best 37-10 in sectionals for second place behind Maggie Ewen of St. Francis.
When Magnussen didn’t make finals, she and Ortberg were in the crowd watching Ewen finish a great prep career by throwing 54-8 1/2 to break the state record and pick up her fifth state gold in shot and discus.
