Bring the family and your old flags to Minnesota’s largest flag retirement service, all done with the American Legion rules for disposal with dignity.
While you’re at it, see the Iraq monument, thousands of flowers and wildlife, like loons and Eagles, at Veteran’s Lake just outside of Elk River on County Road 12.
The Flag Day event is sponsored and endorsed by Elk River American Legion Post 112, Elk River VFW, Big Lake Legion, Hugo Legion and many other groups.
Flags can be dropped off in the days leading up to the event at the Elk River Legion, said Mike Beyer, the past commander.
The flag retirement will begin around 4 p.m. Friday, June 14, with counting and folding. The flag raising with rifle salute by Legion Color Guard is done at 5 p.m.
The actual burning will start after Legion Chaplain service around 6 p.m. A potluck dinner will be served when the retirement is over; bring a dish to pass.
This annual event is being held on Veteran’s Lake in Ramsey at the John Enstrom residence located 3.5 miles east of Highway 169 at 8702 181st Ave. NW. Visit www.veteranslake.com for a map.
