Tennis: Elk doubles team advances to state semifinals

Sam Gearou and Josh Chuba of Elk River won twice in the doubles competition at the state Class AA tennis tournament on Thursday, reaching the semifinals at U of M Baseline Center.

Geaour, a sophomore, and Chuba, a senior, beat Hopkins’ Andrew Novak and Andrew Rust 5-7, 6-3, 6-0, and Maple Grov’s Trevor Kleineschay and Rory Calabria 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-5.

The Elk duo faces Highland Park’s Maalik Konop DeFreitas and Aren Wilson on Friday at 8 a.m. The other semifinal will have duos from Wayzata and Bloomington Jefferson. The championship will be held at 11:30 a.m.

The Elks’ singles entrant, sophomore Josh Gearou, lost in the second round. He defeated Riley Bates of St. Cloud Tech 6-4, 6-0, then was ousted by top-seeded Maxwell Olson of Edina 6-4, 6-2. Gearou had beaten Olson in a dual meet at home on May 11.
