Softball: Homer in 7th helps Elks win state tournament opener

Elk River pulled out a 2-1 win over Orono in dramatic fashion in 7th inning at the state softball tournament Thursday morning in North Mankato.

The Elks were trailing 1-0 going into the last of the 7th as Orono left-hander Samantha Hartman was working a two-hit shutout.

However, Kathi Opsahl lead off the last of the 7th with a homerun to left-center tying the score. Jayme Langbehn followed with a line-drive double off the left field fence.

With two outs, Langbehn scored from 3rd base when the Elks got a break as the Orono firstbaseman pulled her foot off the bag, fielding the throw on a grounder by Courtney Jenson for the winning run.

Anna Pipenhagen pitched the distance for the Elks. She gave up a run in the 3rd when Orono put down two nice bunts and Rebekah Smith ripped an RBI single. Pipenhagen then pitched out of jams in the 6th and 7th inning keeping the score 1-0, setting up the last inning rally.

The Elks will play in the semi-finals against ForestLake at 3 p.m. today, Thursday, June 6th.
