Zimmerman’s Cassie Ortberg will compete in two events at her fourth state track meet, and senior teammate Amber Magnussen will make her first state trip, after their performances in Section 7AA on Saturday.
The Thunder earned fifth-place in the team standings, among 15 schools.
Ortberg placed second in the 300 hurdles in Saturday’s finals at UM-Duluth with 46.12, behind SherahLynn Linkert of North Branch (46.05). Ortberg was state runner-up in the event last year.
She previously qualified for state by winning the long jump with 16-5 on Wednesday. She also took fifth in the 100 hurdles Saturday (16.10).
Magnussen, a three-sport athlete for multiple seasons, will finally compete in a state meet after placing second in the shot put with a personal best 37-10, beating Elk River standout Molli Detloff by four inches for the second state slot. Defending state champion Maggie Ewen of St. Francis won with 47-2.
The state Class AA meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Hamline.
Also scoring points Saturday were Sylvia Michels, eighth in the 100H (17.59); Meghan Seymour, sixth in the triple jump (34-4); and Abby Wisness, eighth in shot put (32-11).
On Wednesday (previously reported), Michels was fourth and Seymour fifth in the long jump event that Ortberg won, while Brooke Borchardt was fourth and Magnussen seventh in discus, and Orberg sixth in high jump. Those placements added up to 53 points for fifth place.
