Tennis: Elks seeded 2nd at state, will open against Mayo

The defending champion Elk River tennis team has been seeded No. 2 in the state tournament and will open against Rochester Mayo on Tuesday at the University of Minnesota.

 

The Elks (23-1) will be making their eighth consecutive appearance at state.
First round pairings in the upper bracket are No. 1 Wayzata vs. St. Cloud Tech at 8 a.m. and  No. 4 Maple Grove vs. No. 5 Mahtomedi at 10 a.m. The lower bracket pairings are Elks vs.  Rochester Mayo at noon  and No. 3  Minnetonka vs. Bloomington Jefferson at 2 p.m.

 

The upper semifinals will be played 8 a.m. Tuesday and the lower semifinals at 10 a.m., with the third-place match at 2 p.m. and championship at 4 p.m.

 

Individuals competition will be held Thursday and Friday. In doubles, Elk River’s Sam Gearou and Josh Chuba face Hopkins’ Andrew Novak and Andrew Rust at 10 a.m. Thursday. In singles, Josh Gearou will open against St. Cloud Tech’s Riley Bates at 8 a.m.
