Cassandra Orberg of Zimmerman won long jump at Section 7AA track on Wednesday at UM-Duluth, and the Thunder had eight athletes scoring points on the first day of the meet.
Most of the finals will be held Saturday.
Ortberg, a senior, won with a jump of 16-5 1/2, qualifying for her fourth state meet. Ortberg was also sixth in high jump with 4-10 and qualified for finals in the 100 and 300 hurdles with third-places in prelims.
Also in long jump, senior Sylvia Michels was fourth with 15-6 and freshman Meghan Seymour was fifth with 15-4.
Zimmerman junior Brooke Borchardt was fifth in discus with 107-2 and senior Amber Magnussen seventh with 106-3.
With those field-event points, Zimmerman was the first-day leader with 28 points, one ahead of St. Francis.
Jordan Griffin took fourth in boys triple jump with 41-1/2. Dustin Neseth took seventh with 46-0 and Eli Muellenbach eighth with 43-10. All three are juniors.
Ortberg advanced to the finals Saturday with third places in both 100 and 300 hurdles.
