The Elk River Pioneers are 2-0 in the young season after handing St. Michael an 8-2 loss on Thursday evening in St. Michael with sharp pitching, 12 hits, and reliable defense.
Ben Hendrickson worked four innings, striking out six and allowing just two hits. Jim Brown threw the last five, giving up five hits and fanning two. Each allowed one run. Brown got the win.
Kam Crandall socked a two-run double for the Pioneers. Cory Kaminski had an RBI single and Lance Johnson hit a sac fly. Brown was 2-for-5, Harley Thompson 2-for-4 and Aaron Pipenhagen 1-for-3 with two runs.
Outfielder Corey Collins ended the game with a double play as he made a nice catch on a fly with two runners aboard and fired behind the runner at second base.
Wade Gorsett, St. Michael starter, took the loss.
The Pioneers have a game Monday, Memorial Day, at Big Lake, at 5 p.m. and will have their first home game the following Saturday vs. Anoka at 5:30 p.m.
