City Council cool to idea of gas station at School, Jackson

Casey’s General Stores has expressed interest in putting a gas station and convenience store at the southwest corner of School Street and Jackson Avenue in Elk River. But the Elk River City Council isn’t sold on the idea and has told Casey’s as much.

The parcel would have to be rezoned from C-2 Office District to C-1 Central Commercial for a Casey’s to be built there. In a work session earlier this month, the City Council met with Brian DePrezs of Casey’s. The session was a chance for the council to provide informal, nonbinding feedback on the proposed rezoning. Council members indicated while they had nothing against Casey’s, they didn’t feel the site was a good fit for a gas station and convenience store. Specific concerns included traffic and the likelihood of kids running across School Street from the high school to the station.

DePrezs said Casey’s had looked for another site, but it has been a challenge, especially when it comes to access.

“If it’s not this one (Jackson and School), then we’ll keep looking,” DePrezs told the council.
