Car crashes into bus before smashing into a tree

A school bus loaded with 30 student passengers that  had stopped to unload kids was struck Thursday by a motorist in Nissan Altima, according to Sherburne County Sheriff Joel Brott.

The passenger vehicle being driven by a juvenile male continued into the ditch where it struck a tree after striking the bus.

Three people were injured in the accident that happened about 2:30 p.m. in the 21300 block of County Road 5 in Big Lake Township.

The juvenile male driver was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the bus was identified as Rachelle Bayer, 45, of Big Lake. She, and a juvenile student who was on the bus, were transported by ambulance to Centracare Hospital in Monticello with minor injuries.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Minnesota  State Patrol, Big Lake Police and Big Lake Fire. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
