Softball: Kemmetmueller fans 24 as Rogers beats Big Lake 1-0 and 5-4

Katelyn Kemmetmueller struck out 21 batters in 11 innings as the Rogers Royals nipped Big Lake 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday at home.

The freshman right-hander added three more strikeouts in a relief role to “save” the second game, a 5-4 win, giving her K’s for 24 of 36 outs for the day.

The Royals (6-4 conference, 9-6 overall) swept a team that had a 10-2 record previously.
Next, the Royals will play at St. Francis on Friday.

Royals 1, Big Lake 0, 11 innings

In the 11-inning shutout, Kemmetmueller gave five hits and five walks, while Big Lake’s Erin Ralph was nicked for 11 hits, walked two and struck out eight.

The marathon finally was resolved when Madi Anderson led off the 11th with a double, took third as Olivia Olson  beat out a bunt, and scored when Olson stole second, drawing a throw. Big Lake tried to run a play where the center fielder came up to throw home but it didn’t work.

Kemmetmueller was also 3-for-4, Olson 2-for-5 and Madi Grady 2-for-3.

Royals 5, Big Lake 4

The Royals top four hitters were all 2-for-4 — Anderson, Olson, Kemmetmueller, and Elli Anderson — with Elli knocking in two runs and Madi one run. The other hit came from JV eighth-grader Kaitlynn Lloyd, who was 1-for-1 plus a walk and a run scored at the No. 9 slot.

Emma Swanson labored six innings and got the win, giving up nine hits and four runs. Kemmetmueller, called in to close it, gave up a leadoff single, and the batter took third on an error. But Kemmetmueller fanned the 3-4-5 hitters to protect the lead.

Big Lake’s Jaiden Lund took the loss, giving up five runs in six innings, while going 4-for-4 at the plate.
