Cullen Sroka pitched the distance and Brandon Sevre delivered the key hit as Zimmerman edged Fridley 3-2 in the first round of a four-team tournament Saturday at Fridley.
The Thunder had a three-game win streak end with a 13-0 loss to Mound-Westonka in the second game.
Zimmerman (4-6) will host Princeton for a doubleheader on Monday.
Thunder 3, Fridley 2
Sroka threw a five-hitter with no walks, and struck out five, against Fridley. He also singled home a run in the third inning and finished 3-for-4.
Sevre socked a triple in the fourth inning that drove home a run, then scored on Craig Steiskel’s single to open a 3-0 lead.
Sroka complete game was the third straight for the Thunder, all wins. Sevre and Mitchell Mossman pitched a doubleheader sweep of Becker on Thursday.
“We didn’t really have any choice about that — we are out of arms,” said coach Matt Kraus, whose team had played seven games in five days.
Fridley starter Erik Gardner took the loss, giving up four runs in four innings. Tyler Frid blanked the Thunder the last three innings.
Mound-Westonka 13, Thunder 0
Mound-Westonka led the Thunder 3-0 after five, then scored 10 in the sixth, helped by three errors. Zach Nolan, Joey Ziesmer, Taylor Snow and Taylor McEacheren pitched for the Thunder.
