Tennis: Royals defeat Cambridge-Isanti and Monticello, each for the first time

The Rogers tennis team entered this week with a 2-8 record but came up with a pair of breakthrough victories, 5-2 over Cambridge-Isanti on Monday and 4-3 over Monticello on Tuesday.

“We had two really close conference wins … We had never before  beaten Cambridge or Monti, but we beat both this week,” said coach Nick Scheevel.

Rogers trailed Monticello 3-1 before Jonah Larson pulled out a close second set at No. 2 singles and Cory Penick rallied from a 4-1 deficit to win a third-set tiebreaker 7-5 at No. 3. Then A.J. Peterson and Thomas Lloyd won a third-set tiebreaker 7-4, after trailing earlier, to pull out the win.

Rogers is 3-3 in the Mississippi 8, 4-8 overall and 1-5 against section rivals. The Royals have another match against Cambridge-Isanti there Thursday.
